CURRICULUM AND EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETING

May 13, 2015

1.  Proposed Middle School Keyboarding Class 

Kim Silsby, Cony Principal, discussed a pilot program to offer keyboarding classes as part of the Unified Arts program to 7th graders.  Keyboarding is not currently offered in the Augusta School District.  Ms. Silsby heard a lot of feedback from department heads at the middle and high school levels about students unable to keyboard and it slows them down when it comes to doing papers, PowerPoint presentations, etc.   Ms. Silsby would like to offer other skills as well as keyboarding.  A teacher who has a master’s degree in technology and previously taught business is available to teach the class.   She said they’d like start with a pilot program to see if it works.

 

2.  Updated WIDA ACCESS Score Results (ESL)

 Donna Madore, Assistant Superintendent, explained that every year we are mandated to assess ESL students.  WIDA is the company that puts out the assessment and ACCESS is the actual assessment.  It’s tied in to No Child Left Behind and to our Title III federal dollars as well.  The test is administered in January.  Once we get the scores we get designated an Annual Measureable Achievement Objective (AMAO).  For AMAO 1 which measures progress, our imposed target was 49% of ESL students to make at least a 0.4 improvement.  District wide, 66% made progress.  At Farrington, where our ESL elementary program is based, 83% made progress and 47% made progress at Cony.

 

AMAO 2 which measures proficiency, the imposed target was 6% of ESL students to score a 6.0.  District wide, 3% achieved a 6.0.  Last year 11% made the state target of 4%.  Proficiency is dependent upon the distribution of students in the program.  Currently, distribution is heavily weighted toward the lower proficiencies.  

MEA Reading and Math data is used to calculate AMAO 3 which measures accountability/participation.  That data is not available at this time.  

 

3.  High School Assessment Discussion 

Donna Madore, Assistant Superintendent explained that in the past we used ReadiStep to assess Freshmen to inform instruction and determine growth, PSATS and SATs.  The state used to pay for all three.  The State then moved to the Smarter Balanced MEAs so the SATs became optional for students who wanted or needed to take it and the state paid for it. The PSATs we paid for 10th grade and the 11th grade paid for themselves.  Thirty students took the PSAT-11 and about 100 took the PSAT-10.   The group discussed assessments and how everything is going to change because of a decision by the State to do away with MEAs and Smarter Balanced.  All assessments students take are taking 22 hours of instructional time away from those students.  We will have to make some decisions once the state decides what to do.
