Day Program Course Offerings

Spring 2009

 

The Kennebec Learning Center is a division of Augusta Adult & Community Education.  We serve our students by providing an opportunity during the day to take classes based on community needs. These include: COLLEGE TRANSITION (CT) classes in math, reading, and writing to increase skills for college entrance exams, such as the Accuplacer; HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA (HSD) classes in most subject areas allow students to earn their diploma; COMPUTER classes beginning with Basic, Introduction, Keyboarding, and Microsoft Office Suites which can be used towards the OFFICE SKILLS CERTICATE PROGRAM; and ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESOL) classes are taught from a non-speaking level to advanced.  The ESOL computer software “ROSETTA STONE” is available to students.  ADULT BASIC EDUCATION classes help students to learn or improve reading, writing, and math skills.  Our classrooms provide a warm and inviting learning environment with small classes and individualized instruction. Course fees are based on your program enrollment.  Please call Judith or Melinda at 626-2470 to schedule an appointment with our counselor for classroom placement and registration.

NUMBER SKILLS FOR COLLEGE

BUZBY, ROBERT

This course will help adult learners prepare for placement testing and success in college level math courses.  Course content: basic arithmetic of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, ratio and proportion, integers, and simple geometry.

WRITING SKILLS FOR COLLEGE

FOSTER, JANICE

This course will help adult learners prepare for placement testing and success with college-level English composition courses.  Course content includes conventions of standard English usage with their applications in writing sentences, paragraphs, and simple essays.  Writing exercises will introduce students to the rigors and requirements of college writing.

  REFRESHER CLASSES

 

MATH

Haven’t used fractions, decimals or percents in a while or are you looking to brush up on your pre-algebra and/or algebra skills?  This class is taught with a combination of a textbook, on-line academic software and individualized instruction.

 

ENGLISH

This course is designed to improve English skills in the following areas:  grammar, punctuation, capitalization, writing, and editing.  Therefore enabling the student to effectively develop the English foundation to pass placement exams for school or the workplace. Students will reinforce their learned skills by on-line academic software, completing workbook exercises in class as well as homework assignments.

 

 

ENGLISH SPEAKERS of OTHER LANGUAGES

To all of you who are English Speakers of Other Languages Come join one of Jan Foster’s ESL classes to increase language proficiency in the following areas as needed: everyday speech, pronunciation, grammar, and writing.  The informal classroom setting creates a relaxed environment for learning and socialization to take place.  Day and evening classes are offered. No matter what your age, if you are not quite sure how to navigate or get the most from your computer then this is the class for you.  You will become familiar with basics of using a computer.  The concept of Windows will be introduced as well as e-mailing (with attachments) and safe Internet searches.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS

KEISTER, SCOTT

This class introduces you to basic computer terminology, various computer operating systems including Microsoft and other application software programs.  This class enables individuals to work independently on a PC (personal computer) and gain basic understanding of how computers function from the inside out.  You will learn how to improve your computer’s performance, fix simple file and disk corruption problems and protect your computer from the harmful world of the Internet.  A basic understanding of a computer is helpful but not required.

This class is designed for the individual student who needs support for everyday life skills.  Time will be devoted to basic nutrition, cooking, and crafts.  Proper social skills will be incorporated as well as maintaining reading and math skills.

PERSONAL LIFE MANAGEMENT

This class is designed for the individual student who needs support for everyday life skills.  Time will be devoted to goal setting, creating a budget, maintaining a checkbook, understanding household expenses, and completing various types of applications.  Other topics to be covered are health, nutrition, and proper social skill.

Topics include: camera formats, file size, digital image sensors, file formats, storage devices and systems, and getting connected. NATURAL SOYBEAN CANDLE MAKING

HOWARD, JUDITH

Learn how to make an all natural soybean vegetable wax candle.  Soybean wax is non-toxic and water soluble.  These candles do burn longer and cleaner than petroleum based candles.

WOOL MITTENS

HOWARD, JUDITH

Learn how to sew felted woolen mittens from old sweaters with a fleece lining.  Basic sewing skills are required.  Students need to bring their own sewing machine, sharp scissors, thread, straight pins and a few decorative buttons.  The instructor will provide all other supplies.

ENRICHMENT REGISTRATION PROCESS

There are several ways to register for one of our enrichment classes.  A registration form can be obtained from either our brochure or website link (click here).  Mail your completed form along with your payment to Augusta Adult Education, 33A Union Street, Augusta, ME 04330.  We accept checks, money orders (payable to Augusta Adult Education), and credit/debit cards.  You may also register by phone if using a debit/credit card.  There is a $3.00 processing fee when using a credit card.  Walk-ins are always welcomed.

 

We are located at 33A Union Street in Augusta.  It is adjacent to Capitol Park in the same building as the Police Department and Housing Authority.  The classes are located on the first floor and are barrier free.  Parking is available in the lot to the left of the building.
