
The KV Academy was developed in response to the need for developmental and college prep courses and is a bridge program leading to college. These classes are designed for high school graduates or GED recipients who intend to apply to post-secondary institutions. The KV Academy courses offered this semester are listed below. Registration is free to College Transition participants. Students pay for books and lab fees. College Transition participants must agree to complete four out of six activities listed below:
· Meet at least twice with your College Transition coach
· Complete pre- and post-Accuplacer tests
· Enroll in at least one KV Academy Course
· Participate in at least one College Transition workshop
· Participate in a cohort group
· Tour at least one college campus
Non-College Transition program participants will be charged a $50.00 registration fee.
NUMBER SKILLS FOR COLLEGE
This course will help adult learners prepare for placement testing and success in college level math courses. Course content: basic arithmetic of whole numbers, fractions, decimals, percents, ratio and proportion, integers, and simple geometry.

ALGEBRA SKILLS FOR COLLEGE
This course is intended to provide the basic algebra akills required for success in college algebra. Course content includes real numbers and algebraic expressions, using formulas, solving linear equations and inequalities, operations with polynomials, solving quadratic equations, etc.

WRITING SKILLS FOR COLLEGE
This course will help adult learners prepare for placement testing and success with college-level English composition courses. Course content includes conventions of standard English usage with their applications in writing sentences, paragraphs, and simple essays. READING FOR COLLEGE
This course is for students who are preparing for college and would like to increase their comprehension, vocabulary, ability to recognize the main idea, understand comparison and contrast, and cause and effect. Techniques in reading will be taught in order to be able to read smarter - not harder. The class is taught using the STAR reading method to prepare students to pass the college entrance Accuplacer assessment. The instructor will use PowerPath screening for vision, hearing, and scotopic sensitivity.

COLLEGE PREP CHEMISTRY WITH LAB
This course is for students who have not previously taken a Chemistry course. It is a college preparation course for students interested in attending an academic or technical college. For many degrees CP Chemistry is a pre-requisite to college course work. Class emphasizes mathematical relationships, formulas, equations, atomic structure, gas laws, naming compounds, acids and bases. Therefore, an understanding of algebra is necessary. The class methods of teaching are a combination of lecture, small group practice, drill work, lab experiments, and worksheets. Please bring a scientific calculator.

COLLEGE PREP BIOLOGY
This lab-based science course introduces basic biological reactions including photosynthesis, respiration, and the synthesis and decomposition of biological molecules. Genetic and biological concepts, taxonomy of kingdoms, ecological processes and functions, and an introduction to human systems are presented.
