English As A Second Language

English As A Second Language is a district-wide program of the Augusta Public Schools. Guided by an ESL Advisory Council and a locally approved Lau Plan, this program is currently housed at three local magnet schools; Farrington School, Hodgkins Middle School, and Cony High School. The program is designed for Limited English Proficient students in grades K-12. With an emphasis on listening, speaking reading, writing, and study skills, the over-all goal is for limited English students to attain grade-level proficiency.

All students are partially mainstreamed and supported in English as well as content areas through various second language models such as: pull-out, inclusionary, sheltered English, sheltered content-area.

High School students are aided with the development of marketable skills for entrance into the work force if post-secondary education is not indicated. The Capital Area Technical Center offers many programs that support and further develop these skill areas. All programs stress appreciation for native heritage and acculturation into American life.

This program is available to all qualified language minority students. This includes students indigenous to the United States as well as immigrants, refugees and foreign-exchange students.
