HIGH SCHOOL COMPLETION
For whatever reason, many people in the state of Maine have not completed their high school diploma. If you already have credits from your previously attended high school, we will send for your transcript, analyze it, and then tell you what you need for completion. In most cases it is a requirement for employment, college or job training.
There are two ways to complete high school credentials: a Cony High School Diploma or a State of Maine General Educational Development (G.E.D.) test. Both are recognized as high school completion credentials.
The first step is to make an appointment with Karen Drinkuth, our counselor. She will discuss your goals, learning styles, administer the CASAS assessment to see where you stand academically and develop a plan for high school completion.
For a
Cony High School Diploma, you will have
to earn 24 Carnegie Units or credits to graduate. Your transcript is
analyzed and previous high school, college work, volunteer, homemaking, military, and life experiences will
be applied to determine remaining
requirements for graduation. Basic requirements are as follows:
| ENGLISH | 4.0 CU | FINE ARTS/SPEECH | 1.0 CU |
| U. S. HISTORY | 1.0 CU |
ECONOMIC FOUNDATIONS/CAREERS |
0.5 CU |
| GOVERNMENT/CIVICS | 0.5 CU |
SCIENCE |
3.0 CU |
| GLOBAL INSIGHTS | 1.0 CU | COMPUTERS | 0.5 CU |
| SOCIAL STUDIES | 0.5 CU | ELECTIVES | 8.5 CU |
| MATHEMATICS | 3.0 CU | COMMUNITY SERVICE | 15 HRS. |
| HEALTH | 0.5 CU | ||
| TOTAL: | 24.0 CU |
All
required courses are offered through adult education. It is a constructive way
to enjoy a night out and
earn your high school diploma at the same time.
GED
Another way to earn a high school credential is through the GED process. The GED is for those who have gained knowledge through life experiences. It is for those who may have taken a couple of years of high school classes, but do not have the luxury of time to finish through evening classes, because of job constraints or family obligations. It is for those who may have a really good job offer waiting, but need a high school credential right away. Or it maybe for those up for a promotion, but need “that piece of paper”. Maybe the GED is the best way for you. To take the FREE CASAS, pre-tests, the GED prep-classes, and the GED tests, call Karen Drinkuth for an appointment at 626-2470.
WHAT ARE THE COSTS?
Because your Federal, State, and Local tax dollars provide the major part of funding for high school credentials, these classes are a bargain! Registrations for high school diploma, and for GED. students are FREE. For classes listed as self-supporting, the fees listed are the fees you must pay. Also, some classes (like Lab Biology or Chemistry) have lab fees that must be paid by students. We will not turn away any student who really wants to complete their high school studies. If you have a problem paying the fees, please speak with the Director of our program.
