WorkReady Program
A
four week credential program created by Maine Adult Education with area
employers so that participants (16-24 year old youths) who go through this 80
hour program will have the skills employers are looking for in employees. Learn
how to present yourself. Learn what it takes to get and keep a better job. And
through this certification be assured of an interview by one of the local
businesses that are part of this WorkReady program.
WorkReady classes cover the following entry level soft skills and computers:
· Self-evaluation of worker skills and abilities, experiences, interests, learning styles, personality, and preferences
· Communication skills written, oral, non-verbal, and technical
· Working skills in problem solving, critical thinking, following directions, and team work
· Develop appropriate attitudes, organization and time management, conflict resolution, and stress relief.
· Develop cover letters, resumes, interview skills, and dress for the workplace.
WorkReady counts towards a work search waiver.
Classes will begin March 3, 2008, from 9:00 A.M. to 2:30, Monday through Thursday, and ending with a certificate ceremony March 31, 2008. NO COST

NUMBER SKILLS FOR COLLEGE

This course is for the learner preparing to enter college and needs to pass the Accuplacer Assessment Test. Topics covered include fractions, percents, decimals, proportions, signed numbers, geometry and data analysis. This class is taught with a combination of a textbook, on-line academic software and individualized instruction. Class is limited to 8 students.

REFRESHER CLASSES
COLLEGE WRITING
FOSTER, JAN
This course is designed to build your writing skills in the five-step writing process. Then the student will write, edit, revise, polish, and create a writing portfolio. This portfolio will contain samples of a narrative, a descriptive, an expository, a persuasive, an editorial, and other writings assigned. The student will review the points of grammar and sentence structure in order to express clear thoughts through written communication. Finally the student will produce a 3-5 page research paper complete with cover page, outline, thesis, and works cited.

This class is for individuals who have no computer skills or very little. The class starts by introducing simple concepts of the computer, such as the keyboard, mouse and yes, even the power button. In addition you will learn the basics of the Microsoft Operating System as well as the concept of Windows and folders to store a variety of information. If you have never touched a computer before or find them to be an obstacle to joining the 21st Century, then this is the class for you.

INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTERS

This class introduces you to basic computer terminology, various computer operating systems including Microsoft and other application software programs. This class enables individuals to work independently on a PC (personal computer) and gain basic understanding of how computers function from the inside out. You will learn how to improve your computer’s performance, fix simple file and disk corruption problems and protect your computer from the harmful world of the Internet. A basic understanding of a computer is helpful but not required.

Are you having problems integrating information with computers in college or the work environment? Instruction in this class will assist you in making connections such as how to print and access information with any computer environment. In addition you will be exposed to collaborative software programs like Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft One Note. Then you will learn how to integrate these communication devices into your own network system and web service. STAR is a Student Achievement in Reading Program that provides a systemic order, explicit direction, and direct application in alphabetics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension to increase the student’s level of reading. This is done by providing the steps needed according to the student’s abilities in understanding the written text and level of reading. Therefore a student is placed in a group according to assessment. The student will be able to understand what they are learning and why through a variety of strategies that are taught.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY I

This class is the next level in understanding digital photography. It focuses on what to do with your still digital images, once you have a basic understanding of your digital camera. You will be exposed to editing concepts and printing locally, as well as online. Programs such as Adobe PhotoShop Elements will be demonstrated and techniques such as rotating, cropping, red-eye correction and the use of the magic wand will be discussed. Other programs include the use of “Windows Photo Story” to create a professional quality DVD to share with your friends and family.

OUR FIFTY STATES

Students
develop a basic understanding of geography, historical, and cultural events of
the state being studied. Time is spent making projects relating to that state.
As a conclusion, students prepare a meal using key ingredients native to the
state in the menu. An emphasis is placed on meal preparation as well as working
together improving social skills. Class is limited to 6 students.

We are located at 33A Union Street in Augusta. It is adjacent to Capitol Park in the same building as the Police Department and Housing Authority. The classes are located on the first floor and are barrier free. Short term parking is available in the front of the building and long term parking is available in the lot to the left of the building.
