Goals and Objectives
- To provide a safe, respectful learning environment for all students
- Offer students with disabilities learning opportunities that enable them
to meet their academic potential
- Trade areas prepare students to enter mainstream programs and support the
transition of DO students into the workforce, training programs, or
post-secondary education.
- Stress that each student enhance his/her own talent, attitude, and
individuality while supporting the completion of their vocational training.

Beth has over 20 years experience in Special Education in the Augusta
School Department and graduated from UMF in 1985.
Beth has worked at CATC since 1980 and is a member of the Maine
Association for Career and Technical Education. Beth has worked diligently to
connect with support services for students with disabilities at CATC. Beth is
a strong advocate for her students.

Mr. Mike Brunelle, Auto-Reconditioning

Mike is a certified teacher in the areas of Auto Mechanics and Special
Needs Level I.
Mike has been a Diversified Occupations instructor at CATC for fourteen
years, has Service Manager and Technician experience, and is Certified in
Automotive Service Excellence.
Mr. Robby Vachon, Human Services

- Robby is a Cony High School graduate and also a graduate of the Gunnery
School. Robby also attended Washington and Jefferson College. He is a
Certified Educational Technician III in Special Education.
- In his spare time he enjoys coaching Varsity Football and Junior Varsity
Baseball at Cony High School.
Mr. Mike Nicholas, Building Trades/Maintenance

Mike Nicholas has been an instructor at CATC for 10 years and has a
Vocational Teaching Certificate in Carpentry from the University and Technical
College system here in Maine.
Mike brings to CATC 15 years of employment experience in Construction and
Maintenance related fields, has 20 years service in the United States Army
Reserve, and has also been an Adult-Ed. Instructor in
Augusta.
Mrs. Rene Albison

Mrs. Albison has been teaching in Augusta for thirteen years and is a graduate
of the University of Maine
Rene has a Teaching Certificate in K –12 Special Education, and qualifies
for an endorsement in Business Education, Social Studies, Math, and Science in
grades 7-12.Rene will complete her Masters Degree in Education in May,
2008.

Mrs. Gay has worked in the Augusta School District for 18 years.
After working at the elementary and middle school levels this is her second
year at CATC.

She is a graduate of Cony High School and Clark University.

Mrs. Muffy Loiko-Shockley

Mrs. Shockley has an Associate of Science Degree with an emphasis in
Education from the University of Maine and is eligible for certification in
Vocational Special Education. She continues taking courses for professional
development. Muffy has been teaching at CATC since 1988.

DO Academics offers the above seven courses for students with learning
disabilities.
Full day students can choose a technical program and take three courses of their
choice in the morning or afternoon session depending on their shop
schedule.

Planning and Preparation
Students are enrolled in our academic program through the PET process at
their sending high schools
Once we receive their files we then schedule them and mesh our curriculum
with the Individual Education Plan proposed by the sending
school
Classroom Environment
Individualized instruction and small group atmosphere help our students
achieve success in areas of difficulty
Technology, such as the Kurzweil reading system and voice recognition
software can also increase student learning by helping them overcome their
disability while in the classroom

Instruction
Currently, DO Academics curriculum has been aligned with The Maine
Learning Results.
We strive to develop curriculum from a multi-modal perspective in order to
reach all learners

Professional Responsibilities
Support the integration of special education students within the population
at CATC
Develop curriculum that meets the Individual needs of students from eight
area high schools
Provide academic assistance to students within their technical program when
asked by a trades instructor
Offer knowledge or expertise regarding teaching methods that work well with
students with disabilities
Attend formal PET’s and other meetings as a school representative when
requested
Integration with Maine Learning Results
DO Academics and Technical Programs continue to mesh our learning
opportunities with the MLR

NEASCT Commendations
The visiting committee determined that DO Academics/Technical Programs are
student centered and has good rapport with students.
The staff of DO Academics/Technical Programs work closely together to
provide a safe, cooperative learning environment.

MAVEA Curriculum Integration Project and the Maine Learning
Results
The Diversified Occupations technical program instructors, under the
direction of MAVEA(Maine Association of Vocational Education Administrators)
have all spent time in several workshops developing their Curriculum
Integration Documents, which show links between their classroom goals and
objectives and the Maine Learning Results.
