Chizzle Wizzle History
The Grand Ball...
A tradition that has survived uninterrupted for a century is the Chizzle Wizzle Ball. For many years the “Grand Ball” was held on the same night as the play, but in 1928 it was moved to a separate night.
Until the 1940’s the Ball was truly “grand”, with a formal receiving line, patronesses who acted as chaperones, and ushers who announced couples as they entered the room. Each girl had a dance program, and couples formally exchanged dances with their friends, recording each exchange in their dance program. Of course one saved the slow, romantic dance numbers for one’s date of the evening.
The Chizzle Wizzle Ball continues to be a very formal affair, the most important social event here at Cony High School. The girl’s gown’s reflect the times, not necessarily floor length as in the past, but stylishly elegant. The boys wear tuxedos in a variety of styles and colors, frequently selected to complement their dates’ gowns. Corsages and boutonnieres are still components of the Ball ensemble.
