Who is Lillian Parks Hussey?

Lillian Parks Hussey was born in 1867 in West Gardiner. She lived in Hallowell and graduated from Hallowell Classical and Scientific Academy. Following her education, she taught at South Grammar School and Loudon Hill School in Hallowell.

She gave up teaching to marry, but continued to be a strong supporter of education. Lillian Parks Hussey maintained an interest in schools in Hallowell and Augusta.

The Hussey family lived at 21 Bangor Street which is currently the location of the Giroux and Perry Agency. Two of Lillian Parks Hussey's daughters became high school teachers while a third daughter and two sons ran Hussey Hardware on Bangor Street. Lillian Parks Hussey died at age 86 in 1953. Hussey School was named in her honor.

Hussey Code
This note is to let new Hussey parents know about our program of helping our students become responsible for their efforts each and every day; it should be a great refresher for current parents, too.

The "Hussey School Code" is a short, simple list of those words and actions we would ask all Hussey community members to remember and follow. The Code reads as follows:

As Members of the Hussey Community,

We will ACT and TALK:

RESPONSIBLY

RESPECTFULLY

SAFELY

HELPFULLY

KINDLY

POLITELY

We base many discussions and decisions at the school around whether we are following the Hussey Code or not when participating in a certain activity or exchange. When we find we are not following this code, we find a way to work towards better daily effort. Hussey School has worked hard as a community to develop procedures that help students learn from their "mistakes" and develop strong, capable attitudes towards relating with each other at Hussey.

We thought providing a quick description of our program and some common terms we use (that aren’t common until you know them!!) would help you at home understand what has happened at school involving your child. Hopefully this outline will answer those first "what are they talking about?!?" questions you might have when your child comes home, reporting an incident at school. If at any time in the year you need more questions answered, PLEASE feel free to call us (626-2461.)

Working together on behalf of your children is the strongest message we can send to them about community membership and behavioral expectations.

HUSSEY SCHOOL SONG

By Martin F. Swinger and the students at Hussey School

March, 2000

WE ARE SO HELPFUL,

KIND AND RESPECTFUL,

SAFE AND POLITE WITH

RESPONSIBILITY.

LEARN HOW TO LEARN

ENJOY LEARNING, TOO;

THAT’S WHAT WE HUSSEY BEARS

AT HUSSEY DO.

There’s a flagpole standing in the parking lot

Of the old brick school on the hill;

The pledge of allegiance

Is echoing there still.

The hall is full of excitement

With art and decorated doors;

The morning meeting

Is what we’re gathered for.

WE ARE SO HELPFUL,

KIND AND RESPECTFUL,

SAFE AND POLITE WITH

RESPONSIBILITY.

LEARN HOW TO LEARN

ENJOY LEARNING, TOO;

THAT’S WHAT WE HUSSEY BEARS

AT HUSSEY DO.

 (repeat)

The Hussey colors are blue and white,

The tiles on the floor are green;

Red paws on the playground

We all know what they mean.

We love our Cony buddies

And thank our PTA

For fun on “Y” Night

And on the Hundredth Day.

WE ARE SO HELPFUL,

KIND AND RESPECTFUL,

SAFE AND POLITE WITH

RESPONSIBILITY.

LEARN HOW TO LEARN

ENJOY LEARNING, TOO;

THAT’S WHAT WE HUSSEY BEARS

AT HUSSEY DO.

(repeat)
