THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR HUSSEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELOR

•    Name:  Neera Harmon
•    Schedule:  Tuesday all day, Wednesday morning, Thursday all day
•    Phone:  626-2461  x 3855

•    What do you do?
Great question!  It is my job to support all Hussey students with social, emotional, and academic issues so they can achieve their potential.

•    How do you do that?
Several ways.  I teach lessons in the classroom, offer groups and meet with students individually.

•    What classes do you teach?
The district has mandated that all students receive lessons on bully prevention, substance use prevention and personal safety skills.  I cover these topics in all grades.  I also aim to cover additional topics such as conflict resolution, friendship and social skills, study skills, sexual harassment, internet use safety, disability tolerance and career preparation.

•    What groups do you offer?
Every year I offer groups based on student needs.  In the past I have lead groups on making and keeping friends, family changes (e.g. divorce), cooperative problem-solving and getting to know new students. (See separate sheet).

•    What can I call you about?
Absolutely anything that concerns you about your child’s social and emotional health or school related problems.

THANK YOU!

STUDENT GROUPS
HUSSEY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL COUNSELING PROGRAM

Mrs. Harmon, the School Counselor at Hussey Elementary School offers several small groups for students as the need arises throughout the year.  Below is a description of groups that may be offered during the school year.

Students become members of groups by electing to join on their own or because someone such as a teacher or a parent recommends them to the group.  Each group typically lasts four to six weeks.

New Student Groups

In the early days of school, Mrs. Harmon invites all new students to eat lunch in her office and discuss changes they are experiencing.  Students learn there are others in the school who share similar feelings while getting to meet potential new friends.  It also gives Mrs. Harmon a chance to meet all of the new students early on.

Friendship Groups

Friendship groups offer a fun way for kids to practice social skills with a small number of students similar in age.  In these groups we work on ways to make and keep friends.  Members of the friendship group may be invited to join because they are shy, appear to have few friends, or unknowingly “turn off” their peers.  Often these groups include students who are accepting and good at befriending others as a model for others.

Family Change Groups

As the title implies, this group is for kids whose family is likely experiencing a major change such as separation or divorce.  In this group, we discuss the impact of the changes and the range of feelings students may have as a result.  Many kids find comfort in not being the “only kid” in school with divorced or separated parents. We discuss positive ways of dealing with stress and uncomfortable feelings.

Please feel free to contact Mrs. Harmon for more information at Hussey Elementary School, 626-2461 x 3855.

Counselor’s Corner

September

Things are in full swing here at Hussey and we’re so glad to have your children back in the building.   We also have almost 15 new students from as near as Augusta and as far as Wyoming.  I’ve had the pleasure of eating lunch with all of them and we are lucky to have such a great group of new students this year.

This month we’ll be launching our Playground Buddies program.  Fourteen sixth grade students have volunteered to share lunch and recess with their younger friends in grades K-6.  We’ll have buddies on two days a week and I will continue to offer the chance to play cooperative games with me on Thursdays.  Recess looks extra fun this year!

My daughter entered Kindergarten this year and I was so excited and nervous!  It’s no small feat for parents to offer their children over to adults they don’t know.  So, thank you for entrusting us to educate and take care of your children.  I look forward to a year of sharing lessons on how to get along, stay safe, and take care of oneself.  I’ll be starting the guidance curriculum in Kindergarten with Care Cat’s Five Friendship Rules.  All students should know these rules so quiz them and see how many they remember!

If your child is having challenges at school that a counselor might help with please don’t hesitate to call or meet with me to see how I might help.  I can be reached at 626-2461 or hneera@augustaschools.org.  I am at Hussey on Tuesday and Thursday all day and on Wednesday mornings.  I look forward to meeting you.  Mrs. Harmon

September classes

Mrs. Harmon and Care Cat have been visiting in Kindergarten to learn Care Cat’s Friendship Rules. These are rules that help kids make and keep friends. The rules are:

• We listen to each other (with ears and eyes!) • Hands are for helping, not hurting • We use kind words (like please, thank you, and I’m sorry) • We care about each other’s feelings • We are responsible for what we say and do

Care Cat has been caught on camera practicing each of these rules through out the school. Look for her pictures down by Ms. Jenn’s room.
