Technology
Technological growth in our schools is inevitable. Today’s students live in an environment that requires different approaches to meet their educational needs. Technology is a powerful classroom tool that enables teachers to teach more effectively and adapt the curriculum to each student’s individual learning style as well as allow students to be more responsible for their own learning. There are three committees that help determine the technology needs of Augusta's students.

Network
The
networking infrastructure of Augusta schools consists of a WAN (Wide Area
Network) linking all the schools together to create a switched network with
Internet access being provided from a single building via an ATM connection. All
of our buildings are now completely wireless environments and Cony supplies an
internet connection for the public.
Hardware in Computer Labs & Classrooms
All
Augusta elementary and high schools have networked project rooms equipped with
printers and Smart Boards. The elementary schools also have scanners, CD-ROM drives, digital video cameras, and digital cameras.
These rooms enable additional access to technology for all teachers and students.
The four elementary schools have two portable labs, both equipped with Apple laptops. One lab is used by the Computer Technician for instruction in the classroom in grades 2-5. The second lab is available for any teacher to use to supplement curriculum in the classroom. All sixth grade students and teachers have one to one computing with the laptops previously used by the middle school.
Elementary teachers have PCs on their desktops to manage attendance and grades
while the middle school and high school teachers use the Apple laptops provided
by the state Maine Learning Technology Initiative.
Hodgkins Middle School has iBooks for all 7th and 8th grade students.
Cony High School has
one student PC labs and four mobile PC labs for student use. The Business
Department also utilizes a
PC lab.
The Capital Area Technical Center (CATC) has a mixture of Apple for the teachers and PCs
for the students.
