CURRICULUM AND EDUCATION COMMITTEE MEETING

March 9, 2016

5:30 p.m.

Committee Members Present:  Katie Vose, Chair; April Cusick, Jennifer Neumeyer

Board Members Present:  Tom Connors, Jennifer Day, Edward Hastings, Kimberly Martin

Administrators Present:  James Anastasio, Donna Madore, Troy Alexander, Teresa Beaudoin, Kathy Casparius, Sue Dionne, Heather Gauthier, James Holland, Kim Silsby

1.  Opiates education for grades 4, 5, 6

Donna Madore said that Board Member Laura Hamilton made a request to put opiates education for grades 4, 5, and 6 on the agenda.  Ms. Hamilton did not attend the meeting.  Donna asked the elementary principals if they use the Maine Learning Results Standards for grades 4, 5, and 6.  All principals said age appropriate basic health concepts are taught in those grades but not specifically opiates.  Katie Vose feels 4th graders may be a little young to be learning about opiates. Continued discussion centered on continuation of adherence to the Maine Learning Results standards.

2.  Bowling Club Update

Kim Silsby, Cony Middle/High School Principal explained that part of the process to be an official club is that the request goes to the principal and then it is brought to the Curriculum and Education Committee for approval.  Once it is approved and the club is successful for two years, it is then brought back to the Committee and Board to be approved as an official club.  Rici Justice, Bowling Club Coach, said the club serves students from K-12 and approximately 30 students participated the year. This club has been running for 14 years, originally through the Augusta Boys and Girls’ Club. The club runs 11 weeks and has two sessions.  Parents have paid a $35 fee.

Motion by April Cusick to move to the board to make the Bowling Club an official Augusta School Department club.  Second by Jennifer Neumeyer, so moved 3-0.

Meeting adjourned at 6:30 p.m.
