1.  Early Start Time – Discussion

Donna Madore, Assistant Superintendent said there was discussion about this topic a couple years ago.  The problem with making a change at that time was due to our busing contract with First Student.  They didn’t have enough buses to do one run throughout the district for K-12.  Currently they do two runs. The first run is for grades 7-12 and the second run for the K-6 population. In 2013-2014 Cony High School surveyed students and the results were overwhelmingly in favor of early start times by 639-203.  Cony Administrators took a historical look at the start times and whether there was any influence on attendance, graduation rates, dropout rate, SAT performance, and performance in 1st period English classes.  In all the categories, the data showed students performed better at earlier start times.  With an earlier start time, Cony students are able to take a period one class before going to CATC and students who may need extra help have the ability to schedule RAM time during the day.  It helps reduce failure rates and helps make sure students are able to graduate on time.  Recently Winthrop did a survey and received over 600 responses and it was overwhelmingly not to change to a later start.

The committee would like to survey students, staff and the community regarding start times.  Students and staff grades 7-12 will be surveyed in school and a separate survey developed on line for parents of all students Grades PreK-12.  The results will be brought back to the committee.

Meeting adjourned at 5:58 p.m.
