- World Languages – Discussion
Kim Silsby, Principal of Cony High School, explained a proposal for a pilot program to meet Proficiency-Based diploma graduation requirements for World Languages. Schools are required to issue Proficiency-Based diplomas and currently, there is no graduation requirement for World Languages. This proposal would allow 7th grade students to take a survey class of World Languages and in eighth grade take a semester long language class of their choice. It will count as one of their learning experiences toward their High School Proficiency. In High School they will be required to take one semester of the same language choice that they took in eighth grade and show novice-high proficiency at the High School level. This pilot program will be reevaluated after these 7th grade students enter their freshman year. Gretchen Livingston, World Languages Department Head, explained the ranges of proficiency.
Motion made by Jennifer Day to send the proposal to the board for approval, second by Katie Vose.
