- MS Band/Chorus grading procedures – Informational
Kim Silsby distributed, to committee members, an information sheet that will go to students and to parents explaining the MS Band/Chorus new grading procedures. She said music teachers were finding that students were not going to band or chorus consistently. They were thinking of it as more of a recreational thing as opposed to taking a class. Teachers started taking attendance which made students more accountable. In the past, band and chorus were not graded experiences. The proposal is that students would be given a grade which would validate/support the work they are doing. The grade would be based on rehearsals, concert attendance, critiques, individual small group performance, exams, etc. The UAs will be counted as honorable. If students need RTI, the band and chorus teacher will excuse 6 rehearsals being missed. If they miss the 7th one, they would have to withdraw for that semester but could rejoin the next semester. Band and chorus in middle school would be thought of as semester blocks. The hope is to implement this change during Quarter 2.
- 7th and 8th Grade end of the day schedule change – Informational
Ms. Silsby explained that at the end of the day, 7th and 8th grade students were required to go to their homerooms for a recheck. Teachers requested that students be dismissed at the end of their fifth period instead of going back to their homerooms. It would give teachers 4 extra minutes of teaching time. Ms. Silsby said this has already been implemented and is has been a seamless transition. Mr. Anastasio said he is supportive of this change.
