C.     Presentations:

1.      Reading First Presentation by Gilbert Principal Sue Dionne and Farrington Principal Carolyn Neighoff.  Principal Dionne introduced the members of the Reading First Leadership Team to the Board.  The Team then gave their presentation to the Board.

Principal Neighoff mentioned that this was the best program she had seen since she began working at the Augusta School Department, but that she wonders how we can sustain it after the Grant money is gone.  Principal Neighoff stated, “Hopefully, we will both (Gilbert and Farrington) be applying for a Grant for another year, but each year we get less and less money.  In order to sustain this program with less money each year, we need to continue to purchase the core materials and continue to build the classroom libraries and the book rooms in all four elementary schools.”

Member Silsby stated that it was really great to have the data that the Reading First Leadership Team presented to the Board in order to be able to see what interventions are working for the students.  Member Silsby applauded their efforts and repeated what Member Rende had asked, “What can we give up to make sure this continues to happen?”

Member Barnes stated that Reading First was a very, very important program, but what scares him is that there is anticipated to be at least a 10% drop in State funding.
