Also included are Knots and Lines, Anchoring, the use of Marine Charts, Piloting and Determining Position.

ANCHORING SEMINAR

BASIC LIFE SUPPORT FOR HEALTH CARE PROVIDERS 
MARTIN, KENNETH 
The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers classroom course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner. This course is for healthcare professionals, direct care workers, day care providers, and those who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings. The course is also for community members that are ready, willing and able to offer a hand during a crisis.

HEARTSAVER CPR/AED

This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory, or other requirements. A 2 year certification card will be issued after successful completion of the course. If you have contact with patients at your workplace, you need BLS for the Healthcare Provider, not this class.

MAINE DRIVING DYNAMICS 
WILLIAMS, BILL 
Maine's "Driving Dynamics Course" offers all drivers the opportunity to improve their defensive driving abilities.  This five-hour course will include discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes, and the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine's highways. A certified Maine Driving Dynamics instructor teaches the course. The course format engages active participation of students.  Those completing the course will receive a three-point credit on their driving record.  When registering, please include your date of birth and drivers license number.  REGISTRATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED BY THE THURSDAY BEFORE THE CLASS STARTS.

PERSONAL SAFETY

Personal Safety is designed for any individual who wants the tools to be confident in their everyday life. This class will teach the skills necessary to stay safe in a variety of situations; from outward appearance and confidence level, to utilizing the body as a weapon. Every day items that can be used as a form of self protection will be addressed as well. This course will give you the tools necessary to recognize possible dangerous encounters and teach you how to handle them. Focus will be placed on prevention strategies as well as mental and physical preparation. We will employ a variety of techniques that are easy and practical to use. Ages 14+ welcome to attend. No experience necessary.

PILOTING A BOAT

Offered by the Kennebec River Sail and Power Squadron this course focuses on Navigation as it is done on recreational boats today. GPS. is covered in detail with traditional techniques emphasized so you can find your way when the GPS fails. Topics include: Charts and there interpretation, Navigation Aids and how they point to safe water, Plotting courses and determining direction and distance, The mariner's compass and converting between True and Magnetic, Use of GPS, typical GPS displays, information they provide, setting up waypoints and routes, pre-planning safe courses and entering them into the GPS, monitoring and staying on course by both GPS and traditional techniques such as bearings and dead reckoning. The "seaman eye", simple skills for checking that one is on course.

PILOTING A BOAT - ADVANCED

Further your knowledge of coastal piloting with the Advanced Piloting Course,taught by the Kennebec River Sail and Power Squadron. The objective of this course is to provide a well-rounded background for safe piloting in open coastal waters as well as lakes and rivers. The course examines the various techniques for taking bearings and other methods of determining a line of position. Compass compensation procedures and various methods for determining a position fix. A major segment of the course explains tides and currents, the associated tables and how to apply them in preparation for ocean sailing. Also covered in the course are various electronic navigation including radar and GPS. A Paper cruise through Martha's Vineyard provides an opportunity to practice your new skills.
