Welcome to Kindergarten!

Welcome families to the 2018-2019 school year.
My name is Meghan Marston and I am beyond excited to be teaching kindergarten at Gilbert Elementary School this year! I grew up in Augusta and graduated from Cony High school in 2018. During my junior and senior year of high school, I attended the CATC early childhood program and knew instantly I wanted to become an early educator. In 2013, I graduated Cum Laude from the University of Maine at Farmington with a Bachelor's Degree in Early childhood Education. The summer that I graduated from UMF I accepted a preschool position at Webster Head Start, where I taught three to five year olds for four years. Last year I taught kindergarten at North Elementary School in Skowhegan, Maine. I'm happy to be back teaching in the community that I grew up in.

This year for math, kindergartners will be interacting whole group for number corner lessons to teach counting, patterns, subitizing, comparing numbers, and much more. My Math curriculum will be taught using a workshop model method. First, children will be together whole group for a mini lesson to teach the math objective. Next, children will explore and demonstrate the objective by completing a lesson page for the day. Then, everyone will come together again to review the math objective and share findings.

Gilbert school recently adopted a new literacy curriculum and will be using The Center for the Collaborative Classroom curriculum. Kindergartners are immersed into a variety of literatures, poems, and songs, where they learn concepts about print, high frequency words, parts of a book, grammar, vocabulary words, and much more! Being a Writer, Being a Reader, Shared Reading, Learning Letter Names, and Making Meaning are daily components.
