  1. Superintendent’s Report:

Mr. Anastasio said open positions have been filled except for some support positions.  He said he wants to follow CDC and DOE guidelines regarding the wearing of masks for all staff and students to help keep everyone safe. Universal masking is recommended by the US and State CDCs, American Academy of Pediatrics, Maine Department of Education, Maine Education Association, Maine School Management Association, Maine School Superintendent’s Association, leadership of the local Augusta Education Association, and the Augusta School Department Administrative team. He read a letter from Winthrop Pediatrics in support of wearing masks in schools.  Athletics – CDC recommends wearing masks in buildings, however the MPA has not made a recommendation. He would like to encourage parents to sign up to have their children participate in pool testing. It would help lower the number of staff and students from having to quarantine.

  1. Assistant Superintendent’s Report:

Ms. Grondin said Theresa Violette has worked very hard on the Title grants and they have been submitted to the State for approval. Ms. Grondin spoke about the requested early release days for grades K-12.  She said she realizes this is a big ask of the community and when it was discussed, they tried to balance out staff, parents and students’ needs. Early release time for middle/high school would be noon and 1 p.m. for elementary. Time will be used for staff professional development; discuss student data to develop proactive teaching and support strategies; work on the new math curriculum to provide teachers time to learn the program and use the platform; review the literacy program; allow for more in depth and meaningful discussions on educational initiatives with all staff. She said the pandemic’s impact on both students and staff is huge.  Many students will be coming in at different levels and staff wants to be prepared to respond to the high needs of students both academically, socially and emotionally.

Even though school means are FREE, Ms. Grondin encourages parents to complete the application for free and reduced meals.

  1. Reports from Other School Officials:

Sarah Landry, Principal at Gilbert Elementary said this year they are part of the Big Brother/Big Sister program.  An off shoot of that program is called Bigs with Badges where police officers are paired with “littles” to be mentors for them.  She said letters to parents will be sent out this week.  Letters will have teacher assignments and other information parents will need.  Gilbert Elementary open house will be in mid-September.

Kim Silsby, Principal of Cony Middle/High School said they are very excited to begin 5 day in person learning.  There will be an open house for 7th graders August 31 at 6 p.m. at Cony.  A taped version will be posted on line.  The first day of school is September 1 for grades 7-9,  Grades 10–12 will begin September. 2.  Letters on the schedule will go out August 20.  Honors and AP assignments are on the website.

Jon Millett, Athletic Director, said they will resume athletics this fall.  Parents night for high school athletes will be Sunday night in person in the Cony auditorium.  Fall pre-season with high school athletes will begin Monday and middle school athletes will start with a parent’s night the first week school starts. Homecoming event week is Sept. 20-25th.  Full steam ahead for the turf project. All materials are in for the turf project and the company is working extra hours and making good progress.

Heather Gauthier, Principal of Lincoln Elementary, reminded families that this Sunday is the Greater Augusta Back Pack Event and will be taking place at the Civic Center from 1–3 p.m.  It will be a drive through event like last year.
