Daniel Johnston

6th Grade Teacher

Welcome to my classroom website. The most accurate information can be found on my Google Website: Here. So, who am I? Well, I go by Mr. J and I teach sixth grade at the Sylvio J. Gilbert School in Augusta, Maine. I'm excited to start my 18th year here at the Augusta School Department, and 16th year overall. For 13 of the last 14 years I have been teaching sixth grade at Gilbert School. I run a self-contained classroom in which we will be studying math, reading, writing, science, and social studies. We will be doing a lot of exciting units and I am looking forward to a very productive and engaging year.

Please take a virtual tour of my classroom here.

We actively use GoogleClassroom for keeping track of class assignments. Your children are capable of logging into their accounts from home, but it is necessary to have Internet access for this. For behavior management, we use a program called Classcraft which incentivizes good behavior and proper teamwork etiquette.

Homework will consist of a nightly reading log and math homework on most nights. The purpose of the homework I give in math is for one of three reasons: reinforcing the day's skills, reteaching the days skills, or remedial practice. None of these should take longer than 20 minutes, so if your child is spending a lot of time doing these, please have them work no longer than 20 minutes on their math homework.
