I am so excited to welcome you all to your Fifth Grade class this year! My name is Erin Pottle and I teach 5th grade at Gilbert. Prior to teaching at Gilbert, I was a third grade teacher in the MSAD #11 district for two years. I also taught K-2 for a few years in a small private school in West Gardiner. I currently live in Augusta and am excited to have the chance to work in the same community that I live in!
In 5th grade, we will build on skills that your child has learned in earlier grades. In math, we will work on multiplying and dividing whole numbers. We will also work with fractions and decimals, measurement and geometry. In Social Studies, we will discover the geography, history, civics and government of North America and the 50 states. In Science, we will explore weather, erosion, rocks, minerals and fossils, and cells and heredity. For reading and writing, we follow curriculum programs called Being a Writer and Making Meaning. This curriculum has followed our students through the grades for the last few years, so they are familiar with the routines and concepts. Additionally, we will discuss ways to appropriately use technology at home and at school.
In addition to academics, I strongly believe in the importance of being kind and respecting each other, ourselves, and the classroom and school community. We will work hard to create and maintain safe, responsible and respectful communities in our classroom and school-wide. Our 5th graders have an amazing opportunity to be a role model for our younger students here at school. I know that they will be up for the challenge and will rock it!
I know that things are going to look a lot different than you are used to this year, but I know that with a little patience, flexibility, and sense of humor, we will make this a great year together!
