Hello! My name is Lauren Dow and I teach 5th grade at Gilbert. Prior to teaching at Gilbert, I was a Special Education teacher, working with students from 6th-12th grade. I also taught for many years as an Ed Tech at an elementary school in Western Maine. I currently live in Augusta with my husband, 2 daughters and a fluffy old cat named DJ.
In 5th grade, we will build on skills that your child has learned in earlier grades. In math, we will work on multiplying and dividing whole numbers. We will also work with fractions and decimals, measurement and geometry. In Social Studies, we will discover the geography, history, civics and government of North America and the 50 states. In Science, we will explore weather, erosion, rocks, minerals and fossils, and cells and heredity. For reading and writing, we follow curriculum programs called Being a Writer and Making Meaning. This curriculum has followed our students through the grades for the last few years, so they are familiar with the routines and concepts. Additionally, we will discuss ways to appropriately use technology at home and at school.
In addition to academics, I am a big believer in kindness and respect, not only toward others, but for ourselves as well. We will work hard to create and maintain safe, responsible and respectful communities in our classroom and school-wide. I impress upon our 5th graders that they are role models for our youngest friends at school. That's an important job and I know they can do their part and rise to the challenge!
