Lisa Plourde is a familiar face around Cony. She has worked in the district for 17 years, the first 15 as Career Advisor in the guidance office. She is also Co-Advisor for the Coniad and has advised the classes of 2025 and 2029. Her position was among those affected by budget cuts last year. Fortunately, the district received a five-year, $1.2 million Aspire Grant through Melmac to fund similar positions at the primary and secondary levels. Colleen O’Donnell is Lisa’s counterpart for the elementary schools. In this new grant-funded position, Plourde continues much of her earlier work, including planning college fairs, organizing Aspirations Day, leading student trips to colleges, and chairing the Scholarship Committee. The grant’s major focus, however, is implementing extended learning opportunities (ELOs). Similar to work study, ELOs allow students to earn academic credit for part-time work and internships. Plourde coordinates with local businesses willing to work with Cony students. Cony is always looking for local business partners. If your business is interested in participating, please reach out to Lisa Plourde!

Mrs. Plourde took some of our students to Thomas College to the Future of Business conference. Students got to explore the world of business. They had to create a business and then pitch it to the group.. Shark Tank style

Lindsey Morin worked as an Ed Tech in the district for 20 years before becoming a special education teacher two years ago. Last year she taught at the middle school, and this year she is a high school special education resource room teacher, teaching English and Instructional Labs, where students are taught mini lessons on a rotating schedule, each focused on a different aspect of their IEP goals. Students also use this time to build skills that help them succeed in their other academic content areas, with Morin supporting them in completing assignments for those classes. According to Morin, she decided to become a classroom teacher because she found real passion for working with students and supporting their success in school. Thinking back to her high school days and how important it can be to make connections and show up consistently, Morin wanted to emulate the teacher that she needed with hopes that she could be that for her  students today.  In addition to teaching, Morin is the producer and director of Chizzle Wizzle, sharing her passion for the stage.  You can occasionally catch her on the stage herself at the Waterville Opera House or other local theater groups.  Most recently she played Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls at Monmouth Community Players. Morin was the girls varsity volleyball coach for 9 years, leading the team to be the KVAC Champs in 2023.

Our Cony Grade 7 students visited the Maine State Museum to see the Declaration of Independence this week! • The Maine Historical Society stewards one of only 26 surviving copies of the Dunlap Broadside, which was printed in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776, to announce American independence to the colonies. The document has visited all 16 counties in Maine.

After several years of change, we’re spotlighting veteran staff members who have stepped into new roles. Sarah Moore, a graduate of Winthrop High School and USM, taught Latin at Cony High School for 15 years. A third-generation Latin teacher, she also spent a year studying at Université Laval in Quebec City. When budget constraints ended the Latin program last year, Moore moved to teaching French, a change she is enjoying and her students have embraced. “I like her as a teacher. She’s really sweet. I feel comfortable with her,” says freshmen Chloe Stevenson, who has had Moore for Introduction to World Languages, Latin, and now French. Student Carly Hinegardner agrees: “She’s really inclusive for everybody. She has lots of knowledge about the different languages.”

Every month the area principals and guidance counselors meet with CATC Director Chad Bell and Student Services Coordinator Stephanie Turgeon to go over the happenings of the Capital Area Technical Center. Yesterday, part of the meeting focused on the graphic design program. Cony student Grady Sounier helped teacher Jamie Clark talk about the program! Great job to both!
