MPA PRINCIPAL'S AWARD at Cony High School (Augusta, Maine)—Hailey Johnson of Augusta a senior at Cony High School, has been selected to receive the 2025 Principal's Award, Principal Liscomb announced today. The award, sponsored by the Maine Principals' Association, is given in recognition of a high school senior's academic achievement, citizenship and leadership. Principal Liscomb commented, “Hailey has positively contributed to Cony High School. We are so lucky to have a student like Hailey at our school. In addition to her high academic achievement, she has been involved in so many of our student organizations and athletics. Hailey plays field hockey and lacrosse at Cony. She is an active member of Key Club, student council, Spanish club, the newspaper club, and has been the secretary/treasurer for her class. She is a huge part of the student based health center. The group finds ways of bettering students' physical and mental health through activities and programs. We are so proud of her and believe that she is so deserving of this prestigious honor.” Hailey Johnson and Principal Liscomb and other award winners and their principals will attend an Honors Luncheon in April. The Honors Luncheon recognizes these outstanding students with the presentation of an individual plaque and the awarding of ten $1,000 scholarships in the names of former Maine principals and MPA Executive Directors: Horace O. This is a lab students did in Ms. Wachtl's AP Bio. Students successfully transformed bacteria to glow under a black light by inducing them to integrate a plasmid containing a gene for a glowing protein from a jelly fish. To give more context, this is the process by which bacteria were created for life saving treatments such as the mass production of insulin.

As a result of the storm, all Augusta schools will have a two hour delay today, January 29th, 2025. Additionally, Gilbert’s AM Pre-K has been cancelled. The CATC AM session will be Cony students only and the PM session is as regularly scheduled.

Youth night for Cony Girls Basketball!

The AP Government class recently had the opportunity to interview German politician Thomas Silberhorn. Silberhorn is a member of the Bundestag in Germany (the equivalent of the US House of Representatives) and the Representative for Transatlantic Relations for the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party.
Prior to the interview German teacher Deborah Backman taught students about the German political system and the current political climate. AP Government teacher BL Lippert then worked with his students to come up with questions to ask Silberhorn.
During the interview, which took place via Zoom, students asked their questions, which ranged from how Silberhorn makes political decisions, to the upcoming German elections and how he anticipates the German government will work with the new Trump administration.
The interview was facilitated by the Goethe Institut and the PASCH program. Cony High School is one of only 14 schools in the United States that has been designated a PASCH school due to its strong German program. This designation provides Cony students with opportunities to increase their intercultural competency both in and outside of the classroom
