Mock Election 2025

Today, students and staff at Cony High School joined more than 77 other schools across Maine in a state-wide mock election. The event gave participants a hands-on opportunity to engage in the referendum process and deepen their civic understanding.

In collaboration with the Maine Secretary of State’s Office’s student mock election program, students and faculty cast ballots mirroring the very referendum questions voters will face in November.

“We’ve seen genuine interest in what’s going on,” said social studies teacher Shawn Totman. “There’s a misconception that students live in their own little bubble and don’t care about what’s happening outside, I don’t think that’s true at all.”

Through this exercise, students experienced the mechanics of voting, engaged in meaningful discussions on civic issues, and developed greater respect for the value of their voices in a democratic process.

We are proud of Cony High School’s collaboration in preparing young citizens for active participation in their communities and in our democracy. Special thanks to Mr. Totman, our AP Government students, and all staff and faculty who supported today’s activity.
